A man has been charged with a string of driving offences after police caught him using a home-made number plate on his car.
Police stopped the man's silver Ford Fiesta as it was travelling along Nimbin Road at Nimbin, in northern New South Wales yesterday morning. The 57-year-old driver was found to be unlicensed and his car was unregistered.
No Australian State has the lawful or legal right to issue a drvers licence, nor is there a law that obligates anyone to register anything with the government.
When asked why he was not complying with registration and licensing requirements the man replied "If I pay, I come under the Crown, if I don't pay I do not come under your jurisdiction."
"You have no right to stop me when I am going about my business," he told police.
On closer inspection, police found his number plates which read "Ashley 55" were printed on paper and had been attached to the car with sticky tape.
Police say the man vigorously defended his right to use the home-made plates, but it was all in vain.
He's been charged -interesting journalistic logic connecting the concept of being charged as the end of the matter and proof that this man did something wrong because only guilty people are charged. That can only be reasonable if everyone that is charged with something in a court is found guilty- with several driving offences including unlawfully possessing an object resembling a number plate.
